Step 1Start by downloading and printing the templates provided on A3 cardboard. We recommend printing onto cardboard as this will provide sturdy pieces for construction. Decorate the pieces as you wish. We have used minimal decoration to enhance the “winter wonderland” effect. We have coloured the deer black as a silhouette and created a yellow, glittery star. Allow to dry if needed. Cut each piece out. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 2Run some glue along the inside frame of the open window section of the shadow box. Position the front template piece on top of this panel with the design facing down, making sure the top of the template is at the top end of the flattened shadow box (the short flap end).
Step 3This is what it will look like when you fold the front window panel up.
Step 4Cover the back, square panel in glue and stick down the back template.
Step 5Fold the back panel up as shown. Fold up the small flaps at the bottom and glue to the large side flaps to hold in place.
Step 6Take the middle template and face the design down. Fold the flaps back along the dotted lines as shown. Run glue along each of these flaps and then glue in place in front of the back panel of your shadow box, leaving a small gap.
Step 7Fold the front window panel up and glue the large flaps at either side to hold in place, then fold the top panel down and tuck in the flap to close the top.
Step 8Colour the outside of the shadow box black. This adds to the layered, silhouette effect.
Step 9Place the LED light string into the box, arranging it in the space between the front and middle pieces.
Step 10Gently push some wadding into the gaps between the front, middle and back pieces, covering the LED light string as you go.
Never leave the shadow box unattended when your light string is turned on.
Step 11To finish off your shadow box, glue some wadding to the outside of the box along the base to create snow. Display your shadow box so everyone can admire your beautiful Winter Wonderland!
