Dolly Peg Simpson's Donkey

This Dolly Peg Donkey Idea encourages us to remember, honour and assist children to talk about John Simpson Kirkpatrick and his famous Donkey during the First World War. This activity works best when you use a hot glue gun. You may need an adults help.

Search terms: remembrance day, veterans day.

  • Step 1Collect a spool and 3 dolly pegs. Arrange your dolly pegs to create legs and ears for your donkey. Attach with glue. Allow to dry.
  • Please note: When using a hot glue gun you will require adult assistance and supervision.
  • Step 3Paint your donkey grey with black hooves. Allow to dry.
  • Step 4Cut a small rectangle of red felt to create a blanket large enough to cover your donkey’s spool body. You may like to fringe it with a pair of scissors. Cut a small cross from white felt.
  • Step 5Attach your blanket and cross to your donkey’s body with glue. Allow to dry.
  • Step 6Cut a small headband and cross for your donkey from red and white felt.
  • Step 7Use glue to attach your headband, 2 wiggle eyes and a tail made from wool to your donkey. Allow to dry.
  • Step 8Lastly, use a marker to add nostrils to your donkey.
