Celebrate Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year) with these fun craft ideas!

Paper Cup Rooster

Chinese New Year is an important Chinese festival which welcomes the new lunisolar year. The Year of the Rooster includes the years 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017 and 2029.

  • Step 1Begin by giving your paper cup a coat of red paint. Allow to dry. This will become the body of your rooster.
  • Step 2Give your paper cup a coat of red glitter paint to add a touch of sparkle. Allow to dry.
  • Step 3Using the template provided, cut out a comb, wattle and 2 wings using red cardboard. Cut out a beak using yellow cardboard. Fold the beak in half as shown by the dotted lines on the template.
  • Step 4Decorate your rooster’s wings using PVA glue and fine glitter. Simply paint on your desired design using glue and then cover in glitter. Shake off the glitter to reveal your design. Allow to dry.
  • Step 5Using the glitter technique above, decorate the rim of the paper cup using PVA glue and gold glitter. Allow to dry.
  • Step 6Assemble the pieces of your rooster, use glue to secure. Add wiggle eyes and feathers for a tail to complete your rooster’s body!
  • Step 7You may wish to cover the wooden beads in glitter to add a touch of sparkle. These will become your rooster’s feet.
  • Step 8Cut a length of jute twine to create legs. Glue or tie the beads to the ends of the twine as shown.
  • Step 9Attach the legs to the inside centre of the paper cup and your rooster is complete!
