Solar Eclipse

What is an eclipse? How do they occur? What's the difference between a solar and a lunar eclipse? This Solar Eclipse BLM activity will help to explain these astronomical phenomenons right in front of your own eyes!

  • Step 1Print out the Solar Eclipse BLM onto cardboard and decorate using paint, markers or pencils. You may even want to use glitter to add a touch of sparkle!
  • Step 2Cut around the dotted lines so you now have a sun, earth, moon and 2 x strips.
  • Step 3Lay the sun on top of one end of the longer strip so the 2 crosses align, then secure using a paper fastener.
  • Step 4Lay the moon on top of one end of the shorter strip so the 2 crosses align, then secure using a paper fastener.
  • Step 5Lay the shorter strip on top of the longer strip so the crosses at the free ends align. Finally lay the earth on top of these 2 ends so all 3 crosses align and secure with a paper fastener.
  • Step 6You can now swing the paper strips so the earth moves around the sun and the moon moves around the earth! Research Solar and Lunar Eclipses and then demonstrate what happens by moving the postions.
