The Windy Farm

As you learn about sustainability and wind farms through reading ‘The Windy Farm’, be inspired and create your very own paper origami windmill!

  • Step 1Decorate a paper cup using paint or craft paper. Allow to dry.
  • Step 2To create the sails of your windmill, fold a square of paper in half from left to right, keeping the pattern on the outside. Make a firm fold line and then open the paper back up.
  • Cut out a square of craft paper approximately 15cm x15cm or use a piece of regular origami paper.
  • Step 4Fold the paper in half again but this time fold from the top to the bottom. Make a firm fold line and then open the paper back up.
  • Step 5Fold the paper diagonally, bottom right corner to top left corner. Make a firm fold line and then open the paper back up.
  • Step 6Fold the paper diagonally again but from the bottom left corner to the top right corner. Make a firm fold line.
  • Step 7Open the paper out flat with the plain side up so that you can see the fold lines clearly.
  • Step 8Fold the bottom edge of the paper up to the middle line and make a firm fold.
  • Step 9Repeat with the opposite edge and keep folded.
  • Step 10Fold the bottom edge of the paper up to the middle and make a firm fold.
  • Step 11Lift the fold you have just made until you are able to pull the corner out. Use the pre-folds as a guide and pull the paper outwards to make a triangle.
  • Step 12Your triangle should come out to the left from the bottom corner.
  • Step 13Repeat with the other side to create a boat shape.
  • Step 14Fold the top of the paper down to the centre and repeat previous two instructions to create another boat shape at the top. It should look like our example image to the left.
  • Step 15Take the triangle that is on the bottom left and fold it downwards. Take the triangle that is on the top right and fold it upwards.
  • Step 16You will now have your completed windmill sails! Push a paper fastener into the centre of your sails.
  • Step 17Push the sails and the paper fastener into the paper cup and then push the edges of the paper fastener down. The edges of the fastener will be on the inside of your cup.
