CleverPatch Crafternoons

CleverPatch Crafternoons - Origami Tic Tac Toe

Bring a flat old game of tic tac toe to life with our fun and easy origami version! We’ll even show you how to create a cute little box to hold all of your pieces!
  • Step 1First let’s make some crosses! Take one sheet of origami paper (or any 15cm square piece of paper). Fold in half lengthways edge to edge then unfold. Fold in half again in the other direction and unfold, then cut along the lines to create 4 smaller squares. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Repeat with a second square of paper.
  • Step 2Take one of the smaller squares and place the patterned side face down on the table. Fold in half lengthways, edge to edge, then unfold.
  • Step 3Fold those same edges in to meet the centre crease you have just made and then unfold.
  • Step 4Fold the square in half again from the other direction, then repeat step 3 of folding the edges in to the centre line and unfolding back to a square. The fold lines split the square into 16 smaller squares (as shown by the grey lines).
  • Step 5Fold the square in half diagonally then unfold. Repeat on the opposite diagonal.
  • Step 6Carefully bend one corner inwards, pinching the edges as shown. Repeat this on each of the corners to create what almost looks like a little square box.
  • Step 7Pinching 2 opposite corners, bend them backwards to meet, then repeat holding the other set of corners.
  • Step 8Slide your pinching fingers in along the paper, the paper should begin to bend in along the folds, resulting in 4 flaps to create your cross. Flip the cross over and continue to press the creases so it holds firm.
  • Step 9Create another 4 crosses following steps 2-8.
  • You will have 3 smaller squares left over from step 1 - you can use these to decorate your box later or even make some other fun origami projects!
  • Step 10Now let’s make our noughts! Take a sheet of origami paper (or any 15cm square piece of paper). Fold in half lengthways edge to edge then unfold. Fold these same edges in to the centre line you have just created and then unfold. Use scissors to cut along these lines creating 4 strips of paper. Repeat with a second square of paper.
  • Step 11Take one of the strips you just created. Fold in half lengthways to create a thin strip.
  • Step 12Pinch tightly along the fold and run your finger down the length of the strip, gently guiding the strip into a curve.
  • Step 13Bring the ends together, tucking one inside the other and creating a ring. This is your nought! Create another 4 noughts following steps 11 and 12. Now you have your beautiful origami pieces to play tic tac toe!
  • You will have 3 strips left over from step 10 - you can use these to decorate your box later or even make some other fun craft projects!
  • Step 14To keep your tic tac toe pieces together, let’s create a quick and easy origami box! Take 2 pieces of A3 paper (or tape together A4 pieces to create 2 x A3 pieces)and cut each piece into a square. Make one of the squares 1cm smaller than the other.
  • Step 15Take the smaller square and fold in half diagonally, unfold and repeat on the opposite diagonal.
  • Step 16Fold each of the corners in to the centre point.
  • Step 17Fold one of the edges in to the centre line. Do the same with the opposite edge then unfold both.
  • Step 18Repeat step 18 with the opposite edges, then unfold the square completely.
  • Step 19Use scissors to cut 2 lines down opposite sides of the square (indicated in grey). Be sure to only cut down the length of 2 squares.
  • Step 20Take the 2 large triangle shaped sides and zig zag fold along the creases already made as shown, then fold in the flaps.
  • Step 21Bring the edges upwards to create the sides of the box, overlapping the flaps on the other edges.
  • Step 22Bring one of the end flaps up and over the side flaps, tucking it down and pinching along the top edge to hold in place.
  • Step 23Repeat on the opposite side to complete the bottom half of your box!
  • Step 24Take the remaining large square and repeat steps 15-23 to create the lid of your box.
  • Step 25Place your tic tac toe pieces in the smaller box, then put on the lid to keep them safe. You can even decorate your box to personalise it!
  • You can draw up a Tic Tac Toe board anywhere to play the game - you could even draw one on your box! If you wanted to make lots of pieces you could even experiment with drawing up a bigger board than normal and change the rules to get a run of 4,5,6 or even more in a row!
