Step 1Choose three different colours of coloured cover paper. Pick two colours that will be the colours of your basket and a third colour that will be the handle. You will need two sheets of your third colour.
Step 2Using one of the pieces of cover paper chosen for your basket, fold one of the short sides over by 0.5cm - 1cm to create a crease at the top. Measure along the creased line marking in 3cm intervals and do the same along the bottom edge. Join up your ruler marks. You can now cut along these lines, starting at the bottom and stopping at the crease. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. All of the strips should still be attached at the top of the paper.
Step 3Using your second choice of coloured cover paper for the basket, measure and rule lines in 2.5cm increments along the short edge. Cut these 2.5cm strips, this time cutting all the way across.
Step 4Place your first piece of paper with the attached section at the top in front of you. Pick up a single paper strip from your second piece of paper and weave under and over the strips on your first piece of paper. Push the loose paper strip up into the attached part of the paper to make sure it’s nice and tight.
Step 5Add the second strip by weaving over and under to create a checkered pattern.
Step 6Continue weaving until all the loose paper strips are woven. It should look like a checkered A4 piece of paper when complete.
Step 7Pick up your third colour of paper and glue the whole page down flat to your woven paper. Allow to dry.
Step 8Measure and cut a 2.5cm strip along the short edge of your remaining piece of paper. Measure and cut two strips that are 1cm wide along the long edge. Place these strips aside until the end.
Step 9Fold the woven sheet into thirds along the long side to create two creases.
Step 10Fold the woven sheet into thirds again along the short edge to create two creases overlapping the first two.
Step 11On the non-woven side of your woven sheet, rule a 1cm line from the creased edges within the corner rectangles created by the creases. Mark a line from the corner of the lines you just created to the creased corner. Repeat this step for all four corners of your woven paper.
Step 12Carefully cut along the lines you’ve just made. Fold the tabs over so the plain colour is on the inside.
Step 13Join all corresponding tabs together with glue until your basket is assembled. Allow to dry then trim the excess sides off.
Step 14Using the strips of paper you set aside, glue the thin strips around the top of your basket. Glue the wider strip to the inside of your basket on the longer sides to create a handle.
Step 15Your Paper Weaving Easter Basket is now ready for your Easter Egg Hunt!
