Step 1Cut a square from a green sheet of cover paper. To do this, fold one of the corners on a diagonal then trim the excess paper as shown. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Place the extra strip of paper to the side as this will be used later. You will now have a square with a fold on one of the diagonals.
Step 2Fold the square on the opposite diagonal and unfold.
Step 3Fold all of the corners into the centre point.
Step 4Flip the square over and fold the top two corners into the centre point.
Step 5Flip the paper over again and fold the left, straight edge into the centre line. Fold the right straight edge into the centre line. Fold the top point downwards as shown.
Step 6Flip the paper over so you can see the two folded over squares at the top. Use your thumb to gently lift the flap of the top right square, bending it upwards. As you do this, the sides will open out so you can fold it down and make a rectangle as shown.
Step 7Repeat on the left-hand side.
Step 8Flip the paper over and fold the top middle triangles up so they sit at a right angle out from the paper. This will be the lizard’s mouth! Cut a small rectangle of red cover paper and shape it into a tongue. Secure the tongue into the mouth using a glue dot.
If you don’t have glue dots you can use glue for this activity, however you need to be careful to only use a small amount and allow to dry.
Step 9Take the extra strip of paper from step 1 and fold it in half along the long edge. Open back out. Fold the long edges into the centre crease. Fold the strip in half and secure together using glue dots.
Step 10Fold the mouth of the lizard upwards. Slide the paper strip from step 9 under the flap of the mouth as shown, pushing it in as far as it will go. Fold the mouth back down and crease. Tuck the bottom of the paper strip inside the two flaps of the lizard’s body.
Step 11Hold the lizard loosely around the body and pull down on the long strip to close the lizard’s mouth. Push the strip upwards to open the mouth!
Step 12Use a glue dot to attach a wiggle eye on each of the two triangles at the top of the lizard’s head.
If you don’t have wiggle eyes you can always just draw on some eyes with a permanent marker.
Step 13Take another sheet of cover paper; we have chosen purple, but you can choose any colour you like. Use a pencil and ruler to mark up a rectangle that is 16cm high and runs the long edge of the paper. Cut along the line you’ve drawn and place the skinny strip to the side for later use.
Step 14Concertina fold the rectangle piece as shown, working your way all the way to the end. Each fold should be approximately 1.5cm wide.
Step 15Fold the concertina strip in half to find the middle point, then staple together at that point. Bring the two top edges together and use a glue dot to secure. This will open half the circle up like a fan. Bring the bottom edges together and use a glue dot secure and complete the circle. Place the circle behind the lizard and hold it in place using glue dots. Your lizard now has a frill!
Step 16Take the strip you put aside in step 13 and cut a small rectangle that fits over the lizard’s belly. Cut a curve in the top of the rectangle then draw horizontal lines across the shape. Use glue dots to attach it on the belly of the lizard, holding the flaps closed around the strip that moves the mouth.
Step 17Your Frilled Neck Lizard Puppet is now ready to use. Hold it gently around the belly and move the strip up and down to make the lizard’s mouth move!
