Marching Ant

Discover the fascinating world of ants and extend on your learning of this impressive minibeast with our Marching Ant activity! Perfect to accompany songs about ants or texts such as The March of the Ants, by Ursula Dubosarsky and illustrated by Tohby Riddle.
  • Step 1 Download and print the template provided. We recommend you print on cover paper as this provides a great surface for decorating and a sturdier construction for your ant. Colour in your template using pencils or markers.
  • Step 2 Cut out the template pieces along the solid black lines. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. You should have two parts of the body (one thorax, one abdomen), one head, one base piece, six legs and two antennae.
  • Step 3 To create the head, thorax and abdomen of the ant, join the 2 short ends of each individual piece of paper together with sticky tape. This will create three cylinders.
  • Step 4 Attach one end of the base piece to the bottom of the head (at the join) using sticky tape.
  • Step 5 Attach the thorax along the base next to where you attached the head. Use sticky tape on each side of the piece to secure it.
  • Step 6 To complete the body, attach the abdomen along the base next to the thorax. Use sticky tape on each side of the piece to secure it.
  • Step 7 To create a leg, mountain fold one of the leg pieces in half along the dotted line. Valley fold along the dotted lines close to each end. Repeat for the remaining five legs.
  • Step 8 Turn the ant’s body over so the base is clearly showing. Attach three legs to one side of the base piece using sticky tape as shown. Repeat this process to attach the remaining three legs on the other side.
  • Step 9 Use sticky tape to attach a popstick to the base so it hangs out the back of your ant as shown.
  • Step 10 Turn the ant’s body back over. Mountain fold each antenna along the dotted lines. You may wish to fold the top of each antenna at an angle as well. Attach the antennae onto the head of the ant using sticky tape.
  • Step 11 Your ant is now ready to march! Use the popstick at the back to move your ant.
