Step 1Sketch shapes onto a paper plate to represent Earth’s continents. Colour the land sections green and the remaining sections blue. You might also like to leave white at the top and bottom to represent the North and South Poles.
Step 2Sketch a heart shape in the centre of the plate. Fold the plate slightly and make a small cut using scissors. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Insert the scissors into the slit and cut out the heart shape.
Step 3Use a hole punch to make holes around the edge of the heart shape. Leave a 1cm gap between each hole and make sure they are at least 5mm away from the edge of the heart.
Step 4Cut a 2m length of red yarn. Thread one end through a hole and tie a knot. Trim the short tail near the knot. Thread the yarn across through opposite holes around the heart edge, overlapping the strands. Be careful not to pull too tight so you don’t rip through the plate. Once you have weaved through every hole and filled your heart shape, tie the end of the yarn to a hole to secure and trim any excess.
Step 5Trace your hands onto a sheet of skin tone cover paper. Cut out the hand shapes. Glue the paper fingers (excluding the thumb) of one hand to each side of the paper plate. Ensure the thumbs are positioned at the top. Allow to dry.
Step 6Flip the plate over and glue each wrist of your paper hands to the back of the plate so the hands loop around the edges as shown. Allow to dry.
Step 7Make a hole at the top of the plate and thread through a 30cm length of yarn. Tie the ends into a knot to create a loop for hanging.
Step 8Your Woven Paper Plate Earth is now ready to display for Earth Day!
