Step 1Research the layers of the Earth for your story wheel. We have chosen to include the 4 main layers (Crust, Mantle, Outer Core and Inner Core), plus a layer for the atmosphere.
Step 2Sketch a circle on the base piece of your story wheel approximately 1.5cm in from the outside edge.
Step 3Sketch another circle approximately 1cm in from your first circle.
Step 4Sketch another circle approximately 2cm in from your previous circle.
Step 4Sketch your last circle approximately 2.5cm in from your previous circle.
Step 6Use the printed segments on the story wheel base to label a different layer in each segment, and label all layers in the final segment. This will mean you can unveil the layers as you spin your wheel! You will also need to make sure you label each layer in the following order: the outermost circle is the Atmosphere, then Crust, Mantle, Outer Core then Inner Core for the innermost layer. Ensure you write the labels around the wheel so they face towards the centre.
Step 7Use a watercolour palette to decorate the layers. Allow to dry.
Step 8Ensure the handle of the top piece of the story wheel is at the bottom and decorate it to resemble the Earth. It doesn’t have to be accurate as this will be your own artistic representation! Decorate your design using watercolour paint. Allow to dry.
Step 9Use a permanent pen to outline the layers and trace over your labels. You can also give your story wheel a title – we have chosen Earth’s Layers.
Step 10Secure the top and bottom pieces of the story wheel to each other with the paper fastener.
Step 11Your Layers of the Earth Story Wheel is now ready to use!
