Step 1Download and print out the template provided. We recommend using cover paper or cardboard for best results.
Step 2Decorate the template using markers, pencils, or paint. We have provided different options for the beaks and tail feathers, so choose your favourite one of each to decorate. Be as creative as you like! You could even add other collage materials such as feathers or glitter using glue. Allow to dry if needed.
Step 3Cut out your decorated template pieces. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 4Mountain fold the wings along the dotted line in the middle so that the wings are folded down. Valley fold along both dotted lines next to the dotted line in the middle.
Step 5Cut a paper plate in half to create the bird’s body. Decorate the body with markers, pencils, paint, or collage materials. We have chosen to use feathers. Allow to dry if needed.
Step 6Use the other half of the paper plate to cut out a head shape for your bird. Decorate using markers, pencils or paint and allow to dry if needed. Glue on a wiggle eye and your beak template piece to complete your bird’s face. Allow to dry.
Step 7Glue your bird’s head onto the front of the body. Glue the top, folded pieces of the wings to the straight edge of the plate, so that each wing sits on a different side of the plate. Allow to dry.
Step 8Glue the tail feather template piece to the back of the bird’s body. Allow to dry. Use a hole punch to add a hole along the top of the body piece. Thread a piece of wool through the hole and tie the ends together to create a hanger.
Step 9Your Paper Plate Bird is now ready to display for Book Week!
