Step 1Collect the pieces needed for one top hat, plus one extra rectangular piece. Create a cylinder with each of the long rectangular pieces then stack one on top of the other, using the tabs to slot them together as shown. Glue or tape them in place around the inside. Slide the ring piece onto the bottom of the tall cylinder and fold the tabs outwards around the base. Add glue to the tabs then press the ring down to create the brim of the hat. Fold the tabs around the top of the cylinder inwards, then add glue and attach the circle piece on top. You can flip the hat over and press the tabs onto the circle from the inside to make this part easier. Allow to dry.
Step 2Fold two sheets of red A3 paper in half long edge to long edge then in half again in the same direction before unfolding. Carefully cut along the fold lines you created so you end up with eight strips of paper. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Overlap the short ends of two strips of paper by approximately 10cm and glue them in place. Repeat this process with another two sets of strips so you end up with three longer strips. Allow to dry and place the remaining two shorter strips to the side for later use.
Step 3Starting at the bottom of your hat near the brim, wrap the first long strip around and glue in place. Wrap a second strip around the middle to cover the join of the hat and the third strip around the top. Try to space the strips evenly and don’t worry if the top strip sits above the top of the hat underneath – it just gives extra height! Allow to dry.
Try to make sure the joins of the strips are all positioned on the same side of your hat, so you can place this at the back when wearing and you won’t see them.
Step 4Take the remaining two red strips you set aside in Step 2 and overlap them on an angle as shown to create a joint strip that is wider at the bottom. Glue the pieces together and allow to dry. Cut the paper to a shape similar to ours, as shown in the right-hand side of the image.
Step 5Take another piece of red A3 paper and fold it into quarters. Sketch then cut out a half bow shape as shown, making sure the middle of the bow is on the shorter, folded edge of the paper. Unfold to reveal two full bow shapes that you can then position at the top, skinny end of the strip from Step 4. Fold the top of the strip over and glue in place to create the middle of the bow. Allow to dry.
Step 6Use a black marker to draw in and outline some details on the bow as shown. Lift up and glue the outer edges of the bow pieces together to create a 3D effect and allow to dry. Cut a length of ribbon long enough to tie loosely around your neck and tape in place on the back of the bow. Your Hat and Bow Tie are now ready to wear! You might like to add some face paint to really bring your Cat to life.
