Step 1Print out the templates provided onto regular copy paper and cut out the pieces. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 2Choose three coloured sheets of glitter foam and use the templates as guides to cut out the pieces from the foam. We’ve chosen to use pink, blue and white.
Step 3Using the same colour as your horn piece, cut a 2cm wide strip of foam down the long edge of the sheet. Peel off the backing paper to reveal the adhesive surface and place onto the top section of the headband. The headband gets skinnier towards the ends, so trim any overhang. Align the ends of the headband to the edge of the foam sheet and trace around each of them. Cut these pieces out, peel off the backing paper and stick in place so the headband is now completely covered.
Step 4Take the foam horn piece you cut out in Step 2. Before removing the backing paper, roll the piece in on itself to create a cone shape. Once you’ve done this a few times to help it hold its shape, remove the backing paper and the foam should easily roll back into the cone shape. Use the adhesive surface to join the ends together. Position the horn on top of the headband and wrap the tabs underneath, pressing the horn flat to hold in place.
Step 5Take one of the foam ear pieces. Before removing the backing paper, fold it up and around the headband on one side of the horn. Align the edges and pinch at the base of the headband to crease the foam before removing the backing paper and refolding it around the headband. Press it together firmly to stick it in place. Repeat on the other side of the horn with the remaining ear piece.
Step 6Remove the backing paper from the inner ear pieces and stick them in place as shown. You may also wish to round off the top of the horn if you think it’s too pointy!
Step 7Choose two coloured streamers and cut four 30cm lengths from each colour. Layer the streamers, alternating the colours, then gather the ends together. Secure them in place using masking tape. This will be your mane.
Step 8Cut three more 30cm lengths of streamer – two of one colour and one of the other. Align them all and cut a fringe along the long edge. Gather one of the pieces and pinch it at the bottom of the un-cut edge to create a little tassel. Repeat with the other two fringed pieces then tape together as shown. This will be your fringe.
Step 9Turn the headband upside down and place the taped end of the fringe under the band so the fringe is sticking out the front. Place the taped end of the mane over this so the mane is sticking out the back. Cut a 2cm wide strip from the same colour foam as the ear pieces, making sure it is long enough to cover the masking tape. Remove the backing paper and use the strip to cover and hold the fringe and mane in place.
Step 10Cut a length of masking tape that is long enough to fit around your wrist, leaving a 2-3cm gap. Place the tape flat on your desk with the adhesive side facing up. Cut some short lengths of one streamer and stick along the bottom edge of the tape. Add a second layer of streamers, this time in a different colour, and make them slightly longer than the first. Make sure these are placed along the middle of the tape. Repeat one more time with the first colour and make them longer again, placing them over the top of the tape so it is now completely covered. Cut the layered streamers to create a fringe.
Step 11Cut out a strip of foam that is long enough and wide enough to cover the front of the masking tape. Remove the backing paper and stick it in place before punching a hole at each end of the strip as shown.
Step 12Cut a length of elastic and tie one end through one of the holes. Thread the other end through the other hole and pull in to create a cuff. Adjust the size so it is loose enough to get it on and off your wrist over your hand, but not too loose it falls off. Tie the elastic into position, then trim any excess.
Step 13Repeat Steps 10 to 12 to create a second cuff.
Step 14You’re now ready to transform into a unicorn! Place the headband on your head and the cuffs on your wrists. Wear something bright and colourful, or a single colour to match your accessories. You may even want to make extra cuffs to wear around your ankles!
