‘There’s No Such Thing’ Bear Squishy

Create your very own Bear Squishy to assist as you read the wonderful 'There’s No Such Thing' by Heidi McKinnon for Book Week. You’ll never be scared like Bear on his camping trip, when you have such a cute little squishy to squeeze tight!
  • Step 1Place 10g of wadding into a sheet protector and push to the bottom.
  • Step 2Wrap the rest of the sheet protector around the wadding to create a rectangle shape. Use a piece of double-sided tape to hold the sheet protector in place, taping it tight enough so your rectangle shape bows at the top to create ears, as shown.
  • Don’t wrap the wadding up too tightly - there should be a good amount of ‘squish’ to it.
  • Step 3Cover the whole shape in strips of double-sided tape, leaving the paper backing in place for now.
  • Step 4Choose your paint colours for your Bear Squishy and add them to a palette or paper plate. You can paint your squishy in the same colours as Bear in the book or get creative and come up with your own colours!
  • Step 5Add PVA glue to your paint colours and mix in. The PVA glue will allow the paint to be more flexible, so it won’t crack when you’re playing with the squishy. The paint will simply colour the glue which dries clear, so mix in as much glue as needed to cover the squishy.
  • Step 6Peel the paper backing from the double-sided tape around your squishy. Use your fingertips to hold the squishy carefully. Use a paint brush to paint on a thin layer of the first colour. Allow the first layer to dry before painting a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th layer, allowing the layers to dry in between.
  • It’s important you paint thin layers. This will make the drying time much quicker. You can use a hairdryer to dry each of the layers as you go and speed up the process, but make sure to have the hairdryer on a cold setting, so the glue doesn’t wrinkle!
  • Step 7Once the base coats are complete, paint on Bear’s features using the same layering technique and finish the face by adding in the eyes, pupils, nose, and mouth. Allow everything to dry completely.
  • Step 8Once it is fully dry, you can give Bear a squish and then watch him expand back to normal when you release!
