Celebrate Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year) with these fun craft ideas!

Scratch Board Chinese Lanterns

Prepare for Chinese New Year with these beautiful scratch board Chinese lanterns. Lanterns are an important part of Chinese New Year and symbolise a wish for a bright future.
  • Step 1You will notice a shorter strip along one of the long sides of the sheet of scratch board. This will be the handle of the lantern. Use scissors to cut this off. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
  • Step 2Research different Chinese style symbols and plan out your design. Begin to scratch a design onto the scratch board. Research different Chinese style symbols and plan out your design.
  • Step 3Continue scratching until your design is completed - don’t forget to decorate the handle piece!
  • Step 4Fold the lantern along the scored lines to prepare for assembly. You will need to mountain fold (fold outwards) the lines that run across the 2 pre-cut sections of scratch board.
  • Step 5Valley folds (fold inwards) will need to be made along all the other lines.
  • Step 6Hold the large scratch board sheet at the short edges, bringing them around to meet each other and form the lantern.
  • Step 7Make sure the lantern is aligned and then staple in place.
  • Step 8Bend the handle over and staple in place at the top of the lantern.
  • Step 9Your lantern is now ready to hang – why not make a whole string of them!
