Step 1Plan how you would like to decorate your advent calendar. Think about the colours and if you would like to add glitter. We have chosen to use watercolour paint and glitter. Paint the cover of your advent calendar, starting with the lightest colour and ending with the darkest colour. Allow to dry.
Step 2Use glitter and glue to add some sparkle. Use a brush to help you push the glue into small areas then sprinkle glitter over the glue. Tip the excess glitter back into the glitter tub. Allow to dry.
Step 3Decorate the inside of your advent calendar using watercolour paint, markers and/or glitter. You can also paint the sides of the box if you wish. We have painted a candy cane pattern. Allow to dry.
Step 4Print out the templates provided onto cardboard. Decorate the template pieces using markers and watercolour paint, making sure you decorate the puzzle pieces and reference image using the same colours. Allow to dry. We have provided blank templates for you to write your own jokes or riddles if you wish. Cut along the outside border of the template pieces. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 5Glue the blank puzzle guide to the inside flap of your calendar. You can glue the small reference piece underneath to help you complete your puzzle.
Step 6Cut along the dotted lines of the puzzle to create your puzzle pieces. Mix the pieces up so they are out of order and set them aside.
Step 7Assemble your advent calendar box by folding along the creases. Insert the bottom flap into the box.
Step 8Fill your tray with one puzzle piece in each recess. Don’t forget to add your jokes! We placed one joke under each animal door, plus we also included one for Christmas day!
Step 9You may also like to add your own treats or trinkets into the tray. Slide your filled tray into the top of the box.
Step 10Insert the top flap into the box. You can use tape to secure the ends of the box if you wish.
Step 11Your DIY Advent Calendar is now ready to use or gift!
Step 12Starting on the 1st of December, open a door each day. Glue the revealed puzzle piece to the blank guide on the inside of the calendar, using the reference image as a guide for where each piece goes. Allow to dry before closing your calendar.
