Step 1Download and print the templates provided. We recommend printing onto cover paper.
Step 2Use Page 4 of the templates to colour in a test design and “block out” which colours you would like to use for your design. This allows you to work out which colours are going to work well together and will give you a plan for when you start to decorate the skateboard deck.
Step 3Carefully cut out the first three pages of the template so you have the Top, Middle and Bottom pieces of the skateboard. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 4Lay the template pieces in front of you and overlap the Top and Bottom tabs on either side of the Middle piece. Use glue to stick them in place.
Step 5Prep your skateboard deck by applying a base coat using white paint. This is not a necessary step, but it will help ensure the paint marker colours are nice and bright to help make your design pop! It can also make transferring the design onto the board much easier. Allow the paint to dry.
Step 6There are two ways to transfer the design onto your skateboard deck. You can either lay the deck and template side by side and eyeball the design, copying it straight onto the deck using pencil. Or you can “back trace” - this is achieved by covering the entire back side of the template with lead pencil (or graphite) then placing the template face up on the skateboard deck and tracing firmly over the lines of the template. Once complete, remove the template to reveal the transferred design.
Step 7Use your coloured test design from Step 2 as a guide and begin to colour the skateboard deck using paint markers. Work from the lightest colour to the darkest, making sure you allow any sections that are close together to fully dry before beginning the next to avoid smudging colours. Work in short strokes while following the grain of the wood. Be sure not to press too hard, to help prevent the nibs of the markers from getting damaged.
Step 8If you planned to use white in your design, use the white base coat of the skateboard as the negative space. Then you can use the white paint marker to do any touching up at the end as needed.
Step 9Continue colouring your skateboard design until it is complete. Don’t be afraid to change up the colour combinations from the template you created. This is just a guide and you may decide to go a different way once you start. You may even wish to go back and add patterns over the top of the initial block colours that you have completed. Don’t be afraid to get creative!
Step 10Finish the skateboard by colouring the outer edge of the deck to create a “frame” for your design. This will give your skateboard a more professional and finished look. Allow the deck to dry completely.
Step 11Your Skateboard Art is now complete!
