Chester the Mod-Rock® Chicken

  • Step 1Firstly prepare your Mod-Rock. Cut thin strips of Mod-Rock and place them in a craft bowl for later. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Blow up your balloon and place in a craft bowl to keep it stable while covering in Mod-Rock. We only blew our balloon up about 1/4 full.
  • Step 2To make chicken wings, draw some wings onto white cardboard and cut out. Grab some chenille stems and tape them neatly to the edges of the wings. Shape your wings by bending them, bend a tiny bit of the card at the bottom of each wing to make a tab for easy attachment to the chicken. The chenille stems will hold the cardboard in place.
  • Step 3Cover the wings and balloon in Mod-Rock. Dip the Mod-Rock strips one at a time into a shallow bowl of warm water. Squeeze out excess water into the bowl before laying over the wings and balloon. Overlap the layers in different directions to build strength. Make sure you cover all of the wings and the whole balloon. Let the Mod-Rock dry thoroughly.
  • Step 4Attach the wings to opposite sides of the balloon with some extra Mod-Rock strips, cover over the tabs of the wings until they feel secure. Allow to dry.
  • Step 5Using air drying clay, mould two feet and a beak and allow to dry.
  • Step 6Mod-Rock and air drying clay need to dry over night before you start to decorate!
  • Step 7Once completely dry, finish assembling your chicken. Glue the feet to the bottom of the balloon and the beak to the front of the balloon.
  • Step 8Paint the body and wings of the chicken in yellow paint and the beak and the feet in orange paint. Allow to dry.
  • Step 9Cover your chicken in glitter paint for a lovely glossy and glittery finish.
  • Step 10Lastly glue two wiggle eyes above the beak and grab some gold feathers, bunch them together, tape the ends together and tape to the back of the chicken for a feathery little tail!
