Mother's Day Lavender Pouch

Give Mum or someone special a lavender scented pouch for Mother’s Day. Great to pop in a handbag or drawers to keep her day smelling fragrant!
  • Step 1Use a combination of the below stitching techniques to create a pouch with an embroidered floral pattern! You could use a scrap piece of felt to practice the following techniques.
  • Step 2Running Stitch: Cut a length of embroidery thread and thread through the needle. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors and a needle. Tie a double knot at the end of the thread. Thread the needle through the felt from the bottom and then back down underneath. This is a single stitch. About 1cm from the first stitch, thread the needle back up and then under to create another stitch. Once you have completed your stitching, tie a double knot at the back to secure the thread in place, then trim any excess.
  • Step 3Back Stitch: Repeat the beginning of the Running Stitch, except after the first stitch thread the needle back up from underneath and then backwards and down through the felt next to the first stitch. Repeat this process to create more stitches. Once you have completed your Back Stitching, tie a double knot at the back to secure the thread in place, then trim any excess.
  • Step 4Chain Stitch: Cut a length of embroidery thread and thread through the needle. Tie a double knot at the end of the thread. Thread the needle up from underneath the felt, then go back down through the felt directly next to where you came up, leaving a loop of thread on top. Poke the needle through the felt about 1cm in front, but don’t pull all the way through yet. Place the loop of thread you created over the needle sticking out of the felt and pull completely through. The thread going down into the felt should be looped around the thread coming up from underneath. This method is great for creating flowers and stems. Once you have completed your Chain Stitching, tie a double knot at the back to secure the thread in place, then trim any excess.
  • Step 5Blanket Stitch: Cut a length of embroidery thread and thread through the needle. Tie a double knot at the end of the thread. Thread the needle from underneath the felt near the edge. Thread the needle back down about 1cm away from the first stitch, but don’t pull all the way through to create a loop of thread. Put the loop of thread over the needle, then pull the needle down gently. Pull until the thread is tight. This is similar to the Chain Stitch, however you can leave a larger space next the previous stitch. The spacing between each stitch is up to you. You can stitch in 1 or 2cm increments by making marks on the felt, or if you want a tighter stitch simply make each stitch closer together. Pull tight with each stitch to create a nice border. Once you have completed your Blanket Stitching, tie a double knot at the back to secure the thread in place, then trim any excess.
  • Step 6Measure and cut out a 15 x 6cm rectangle from your pink felt sheet.
  • Step 7Your piece of felt will be folded in half to create a pouch, so plan where you would like your designs to sit. Create some Chain Stitch Flowers on your felt piece. Create five single chain stitches in a circle with the start of each stitch in the centre. Create a small stitch at the top of the chain stitch to finish off each petal. This will allow you to come back up from underneath the felt to create the next petal. Create a series of single stitches in a different colour thread to create the centre of the flower.
  • Step 8Use Back Stitches to create outlines of various shapes. We have created leaves and hearts, or you can be creative and write mum a nice message!
  • Step 9Fold your decorated felt in half lengthwise and stitch both long edges together using Blanket Stitches. Ensure that each stitch is pulled tight. Leave the top open and check the stitching inside is nice and tight. Close up any gaps with a single stitch. Carefully pour lavender into your pouch. Close the pouch by using Blank Stitches along the top edge.
  • Step 10Your Mother’s Day Lavender Pouch is now ready to gift!
