NAIDOC Week – Spin Card

Celebrate NAIDOC Week with this fun Spin Card download!

This Spin Card has been designed by Indigenous digital artist Kerri-Ann Taggart (also known as KEZ) from the Wonnarua area (Hunter Valley, NSW).

CleverPatch™ recommends educators, teachers and event organisers work in consultation with their local Aboriginal Communities (start locally and extend out geographically) when planning activities & learning experiences. Any creative or art making activity that mirrors or replicates Aboriginal cultural experiences should always be undertaken in consultation with the appropriate owners of that cultural property.

Some materials and products may contain terms that reflect authors' views, both current or past. These views may not be considered appropriate today and are provided in a historical context. These views are not necessarily the views of CleverPatch.

  • Step 1Print the template provided onto cardboard. This will provide a sturdy surface for decoration and construction. Decorate the template using coloured pencils. You could also use markers or paint. Allow to dry if needed.
  • Step 2Cut out the template pieces following the thick black outlines. Cut the dotted line within the larger circle (the one with the text) to create a slit – be sure not to cut all the way to the edge on this piece! Cut along the dotted line on the smaller circle piece. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
  • Step 3Take the smaller circle and start to thread the end into the slit of the larger circle from the front in an anti-clockwise direction.
  • Step 4Continue to feed it into the slit until only a small tab remains sticking out as shown. Use a glue stick to attach the tab with a heart into place in line with the edge, so that it hangs out over the side of both circles. Allow the glue to dry.
  • Step 5Holding the edge of the large circle, hold the tab and spin clockwise around the circle to reveal the smaller circle. Stop just before you complete a full circle so the end still remains inside the slit.
  • Step 6Flip the circles over so you can see the small tab of the small circle. Use a glue stick to attach the small rectangle template to the tab. Allow the glue to dry. This will prevent the small circle from slipping out of the large circle.
  • Step 7Flip the circles back over so the design faces upwards. Hold the outer edge of the large circle and then grab the tab and spin it anti-clockwise to tuck the small circle back behind the large circle. Your Spin Card is now ready to spin out and in again to reveal the designs!
