Indigenous Inspired Story Stones

Download Activity Guide

Looking for a great NAIDOC Week activity? Create your very own Dreamtime story using these beautiful story stones!

Research Aboriginal symbols, draw them on the stones and see if you can remember what they each represent as you build your Dreamtime stories.

This activity highlights the significance of Indigenous and Aboriginal symbols while teaching creative thinking.

Some materials and products may contain terms that reflect authors' views, both current or past. These views may not be considered appropriate today and are provided in a historical context. These views are not necessarily the views of CleverPatch.

  • If you are completing this activity in a group, you could take turns in choosing a stone and creating part of the story!
  • Step 1Research Aboriginal symbols that are used in storytelling and artworks. Some of these symbols may include Animals and their tracks, Tools (e.g. Spears, Boomerangs, Coolamons), Natural elements (e.g. waterholes and sandhills) or People.
  • Step 2Using your markers, draw a symbol onto each stone. Try using a range of colours!
  • Step 3Using one stone at a time, create a Dreamtime story. This could be a solo activity or a story for the whole class!
