Step 1Pour approximately 1 cup (250mL) of water into a container or bucket.
Step 2Take the scraps of paper you wish to use and tear them up into small pieces, measuring around 2 to 3cm. Place them in the container of water as you go.
You can add some torn up tissue paper to make coloured paper. If you add darker colours such as red and purple, these will dominate other colours.
Step 3Using your hands, mash the paper together inside the container until your paper turns into a pulp. Once finished, clean your hands thoroughly.
You may prefer to wear gloves when making the pulp as staining may occur. You may also want to use a utensil to help you mash the paper, such as a wooden spoon.
Step 4Add water to the plastic tray from your paper making kit so it is one quarter full. Place the wooden screen into the tray. Place one of the mesh sheets in the wooden screen.
Step 5Pour your pulp mixture into the frame and use your fingers to spread the mixture around so it is an even layer.
A small layer of pulp will give you a delicate, thin paper, a thicker layer of pulp will give you thick, stronger paper.
Step 6Sprinkle some seed mix on top of the pulp. Place another mesh sheet over the layer of pulp and seeds, then place a plastic sheet on top.
Step 7Gently lift the frame up with both hands. With one hand holding the frame, use the other hand to push down on the plastic sheet, squeezing out as much of the excess water as possible.
Step 8Flip the wooden frame upside down and remove the paper by gently pushing it out. Carefully peel off the mesh sheet, making sure none of the pulp sticks to it. Flip the paper over and carefully remove the plastic and mesh sheet from the other side.
Step 9Leave your paper to dry overnight.
Step 10Once completely dry, cut your seed paper to make different shaped gift tags. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Use the hole punch on the top of your tags to create a hole for hanging. Decorate with your favourite markers. You can now gift and plant your tags to watch them grow!
Plant the paper (a single layer is best) under 3-5mm of quality soil. Water thoroughly. Ensure the seeded paper is kept moist throughout the germination period. Keep protected from extreme weather if outside.
