Step 1Take one sheet of A3 cardboard and place it in front of you in a portrait orientation Position your papier mache mask so it is half over the right edge and slightly closer to the top than bottom of the page. Use a pencil to trace a line around the mask and sketch the shape of Tutankhamun’s headdress around the outside of the mask as shown. Place the mask to the side when complete.
Step 2Lay the cardboard on top of a second piece of cardboard and carefully cut around your pencil lines, making sure you cut both pieces of cardboard. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. When you get to the line around the mask, add and cut a few tabs which will be used to attach the cardboard to the papier mache mask. Flip one cardboard piece so that the pieces are mirrored. Lay the two pieces side by side to create the headdress, using the papier mache mask as a guide for how much the cardboard pieces need to overlap. Secure in place using double sided tape in between the cardboard once it is in position.
Step 3Position the mask on top of the cardboard and fold the tabs inside the mask, securing them in place using double sided tape.
Step 4Take a cardboard roll and carefully cut slits 2cm long around the top of the roll, approximately 1cm apart. Use your fingers to bend the cardboard tabs outwards as shown. Position at the chin of the mask and secure in place using masking tape.
Step 5Decorate the mask using paint and permanent markers. You may like to reference images of the original Tutankhamun mask or come up with your own design. Allow to dry and your mask will be ready to display!
