We have used 50g of clay to create our 7 x 8cm crest, but we started out with an 80g ball. Depending on how big you’d like your crest to be you may wish to start with more or less clay.
Step 1Roll your clay into a ball and use a rolling pin to roll it out flat so it’s approximately 4-5mm thick. Use the needle tool from the pottery kit to carve out a crest shape, removing any excess clay from around it. Use your fingers to rub and smooth the edges.
Step 2Roll out another piece of clay and use the needle tool to cut two long strips. These will need to be long enough to make a cross on your crest as shown. Cut away any excess clay then use a scratch and slurry method to join the strips to the crest. This involves making crosshatch scratches on the surface of the crest and the back of the strip, lightly wetting the scratched surface with some water then pressing the two scratched surfaces together. Press them together firmly and smooth the edges.
Step 3Think about four different icons or symbols that represent different parts of your life and personality. A flower may represent nature, you might have a hobby you could create an icon for, a pet, or even the initial of your first or last name. Create each of these icons in clay, making sure they fit nicely in a quadrant of your crest.
Step 4Attach the icons in place on the crest using the scratch and slurry method. You may wish to use a paint brush at the end to smooth out any harder to reach places.
Step 5Allow your crest to completely dry. It’s best if you can prop the crest up off your work surface to get airflow underneath as well. If the clay dries faster on top, you may experience some cracking. You will be able to tell once the clay is dry by the colour and texture.
Step 6Use acrylic paints to add colour to your crest. Allow to dry.
Step 7Use a permanent pen to add in any finer details.
Step 8Add a thin coat of gloss finish to your design and allow to dry. Add a second coat and allow at least 24 hours to cure. The gloss finish will help to make your crest sturdier.
Step 9Your Clay Crest is now ready to display! You may wish to add a magnet to the back or even a brooch back depending on the size.
