Step 1 Prepare your stencil. Draw or trace a simple stencil onto the middle of a piece of litho paper. Make sure the litho paper is bigger than your screen.
Step 2 Using scissors cut out the stencil (keep the inside pieces you cut out as they can also be used in screen printing).
Step 3 Secure the litho paper stencil (shiny side of the stencil facing the screen) to the bottom of the screen with masking tape. Tape all the edges around the outside so there is no screen showing. Don’t tape the inside edges of the stencil though.
Step 4 Prepare your fabric. Remember when painting a t-shirt or bag to insert some newspaper or card inside so that the paint doesn’t seep through.
Step 5 Place the screen on top of the fabric, positioning the stencil where you want it.
Step 6 Spoon on a small amount of paint at the top of the screen.
Step 7 Grab a squeegee and firmly push the ink down the screen. Scrape any excess ink off the squeegee back onto the screen and repeat in a different direction.
Step 8 This technique of screen printing is usually a two or three person job. You will need at least one person to hold the screen down firmly while you apply the paint to the fabric.
Step 9 Repeat as many times as you like.
Step 10 Once finished, scrape any excess paint back into the container and gently peel off the screen, starting at one corner.
Step 11 Pull off the entire stencil and clean the screen and squeegee. Allow to dry completely before making another stencil and new prints.
