Flying Puffin

There’ll be no huffin’ and puffin’ when making this fun craft! The perfect accompaniment to books such as ‘Puffling’, written by Margaret Wild and illustrated by Julie Vivas. Published by Omnibus Books, Australia.
  • Step 1Download and print the template provided onto cardboard as this makes for sturdy construction of your puffin. Decorate the template using coloured markers.
  • Step 2Use scissors to cut out the template pieces. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. We have chosen to draw the Puffin’s features on the other side of the template as well, however this is optional.
  • Step 3Open a pair of scissors and use them to slice along the solid grey line in the middle of the wide strip of cardboard, creating a slot. Make sure to not cut through the whole strip! Valley fold both strips in half.
  • Step 4Valley fold along the grey dotted lines of the wings then use a glue stick to attach them to either side of the puffin as shown. Allow to dry.
  • Step 5Take the thin strip of folded cardboard and glue the open ends to either side of the puffin’s body. Allow to dry.
  • Step 6Slide the folded end of the thin strip through the slot in the wide strip as shown. Glue a 1cm strip of the open ends of the wide strip to the underside of each of the wings as shown. Allow to dry.
  • Step 7Your Puffin is now ready to fly! Hold the thin strip in one hand and gently move the wide strip up and down to move the Puffin’s wings.
