Children’s Day is a time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities, together with all Australians celebrate the strengths and culture of our children. This year’s theme is: Proud in culture, strong in spirit.

Celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day on the 4th of August 2021 with this Dolphin Mobile. These illustrations are created by Kerri-Ann Taggart. More commonly known by her artist name; KEZ, Kerri-Ann Taggart is an Indigenous Wonnarua woman from the Hunter Valley. As the eldest daughter of Uncle Warren Taggart, she has grown up surrounded by her culture.

This mobile can be decorated in a variety of ways. Below are some hints and tips to help you get the most out of your template. This activity will equip children with important skills like colouring, cutting, gluing, folding, constructing and creative thinking.

Step 1Download and print out the template provided. We recommend printing onto cover paper or cardboard as this provides a great surface for decorating.
Remember these sheets can be enlarged or reduced on the photocopier depending on your needs.
Step 2Ask the students to colour and decorate their sheets. We have used coloured markers, however you could also use pencils or paint. Allow to dry if needed. You may also want to name each dolphin after your family members!
Step 3Cut along the black line around each dolphin. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. On the ‘Fronts’ template pieces, use a hole punch where the circles sit outside the dolphin to create holes for hanging.
Step 4Use a piece of thread to connect each dolphin, looping and tying a knot at each hole. Make sure you leave enough thread at the top to secure to a piece of driftwood or twig!
Step 5Apply glue to the plain side of the back dolphin pieces, then place them onto the plain side of the front dolphins, covering the thread.
Step 6Tie the loose thread from the top dolphin onto the centre of a piece of driftwood or a twig. Cut another length of thread and tie each end to the wood to create a hanger. Trim any excess thread. Your Dolphin Mobile is now ready to display!
