Patterned Paper Flexagon

Explore the interesting shape of a polygon by creating your own Paper Flexagon! A Flexagon has three polygonal faces that are constructed from a folded sheet of paper. It exposes three different faces when the paper is flexed along its folds.
  • Step 1Print out the template provided for your flexagon and decorate it with pencils or markers.
  • Step 2Cut around the outside of the template. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
  • CleverTip: The cuts and folds need to be as precise as possible for the flexagon to work properly!
  • Step 3Mountain fold the template in half lengthways, along the centre line.
  • Step 4Unfold the template and place glue on the back of the shorter half. Fold it in half again to secure in place. Allow to dry.
  • Step 5Fold the template, back and forth, along each line of the triangles. This will make the assembly and transitions easier.
  • Step 6Flip so the longer side of the template is facing up. Fold the left side of the paper up along the diagonal line, four triangles in from the right end. There should now be a blank triangle positioned at the top.
  • Step 7Fold down along the line that is three triangles from the top, tucking the end triangle in at the back as you do. You should start to see your hexagon forming, displaying the same pattern on each side.
  • Step 8Flip the template over. Take the blank flap and glue it down onto the other blank triangle. Allow to dry.
  • Step 9Fold back and forth along each diagonal of the hexagon to help folding flexibility. Your Flexagon is now ready to use. Pinch two adjacent triangles together then gently pull and flip the triangles near the centre of the flexagon to unfold a new pattern!
