Rocking Paper Plate Bird

Rock and roll all day long with our Rocking Paper Plate Bird! We’ve created a beautiful Bowerbird perfect for extending on the book ‘Bowerbird Blues’ by Aura Parker, but you could create any bird you like! 

Written and illustrated by Aura Parker and published by Scholastic Australia, ‘Bowerbird Blues’ will be read as part of the ALIA National Simultaneous Storytime 2024 event!

  • Step 1Take a paper plate and valley fold it in half, then unfold.
  • Step 2Take a second paper plate and cut it in half. Cut one of the halves into two quarters then cut those quarters in half again to create four eighths. Take two of the eighths and cut off the ribbed edge so you have two pointy triangles and two ribbed curves. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Pop the half plate aside as you will only need the six smaller pieces.
  • Step 3Decorate the six smaller pieces and your full plate with paint as shown. Allow to dry.
  • Step 4Fold the complete plate in half again as you did in step 1, creasing down so it holds its form. Glue one small pointy triangle in place on the top left of the plate. Align an edge of the triangle along the straight top of the folded plate. Glue the second pointy triangle on the reverse of the first. This will be the beak. Allow to dry.
  • Step 5Glue the two full eighth pieces in place on either side of the top right of the folded plate. Align so the curved edge runs off the edge of the folded plate and points slightly upwards. This will be the tail. Allow to dry.
  • Step 6Glue the ribbed curves in the middle of the folded plate on either side. These will be the wings. Allow to dry.
  • Step 7Glue two wiggle eyes in place up near the beak on either side of the plate to complete the bird. Allow to dry.
  • Step 8Your bird is now ready to rock! Press gently down on the beak and release to see the Paper Plate Bird rock backwards and forwards.
