Step 1Begin by cutting a paper straw into 2 lengths that fit nicely into the mug. There will be a small amount of straw to discard.
Step 2Continue cutting up the straws. You will need to cut up approximately 54 full straws to fill the mug.
Step 3Use a fine tip Glass & Porcelain Marker to draw the outline of a garden scene onto the side of the mug. Remember the mug will be hanging from its handle, so make sure your picture will be facing the correct way. Don’t forget to decorate both sides! Allow the marker to dry.
Step 4Use coloured Glass & Porcelain Markers to brighten up your scene! Allow to dry before placing into a cold oven and then baking for 90 minutes at 160 degrees. Allow the mug to completely cool before removing from the oven.
Step 5Start to fill the mug with the cut straws.
Step 6Continue to fill the mug until it is completely full. Remember to squeeze them in nice and tight so they don’t fall out.
Step 7Your bee hotel is now ready to hang!
It’s best to hang your bee hotel in a sunny to slightly shaded position that is sheltered as the straws are not weather proof. Place the bee hotel above 1 metre off the ground, but no higher than 2 metres. Make sure it won't get too hot in summer. Don't forget to provide lots of bee friendly plants and water nearby so the bees enjoy their stay!
