  • You can use all different types of jars. We used milk bottles and tea light holders as well as our glass jar!
Beach/natural sand will be required to complete this activity.
  • Step 1Create terrariums using a glass jar- Pour a layer of natural sand into the base of your jar. Tap your jar on the table to even out the sand. When you are happy with this layer, pour a layer of black sand over the top and tap to even it out.
  • Step 2Arrange your plant on top of the sand and pour enough soil around to cover the roots.
  • Step 3Arrange a layer of pebbles over the soil.
  • Step 4Use a spray bottle to hydrate your plant and wash any soil you may have spilt on the rocks and plant.
  • Step 5Wrap seagrass cord around the base of your terrarium. Secure in place with your hot glue gun. We used the upturned lid of our glass jar to create a stand by gluing it in place and wrapping it with cord.
  • Step 6To create a handle cut a length of seagrass cord approximately 70cm (depending on how long you want your handle).
  • Step 7Loop one end of the cord round the lip of your jar and secure with a knot.
  • Step 8Use the remaining cord to create a handle.
  • Step 9Thread the end under the cord around the lip of your jar and secure with a knot.
  • Step 10Tighten and secure both knots with a hot glue gun. Trim with scissors.
  • Step 11Experiment with layering sand, soil and pebbles to create your desired effect.
