Step 1Take the red combed wool and begin to gently tease the fibres apart until you have a small pile. The amount of wool you will need will vary depending in the size of the bauble you wish to create.
Step 2Repeat with the green wool so you have a pile of each colour. Grab both colours of the wool and begin to mix and pull the fibres between your hands until the colours are mixed.
Step 3Shape the wool into a ball then push it inside a stocking piece. Mould the wool into a sphere and tying a knot in the stocking on either side of the ball to hold it in place. You can add more balls along the stocking piece if you wish, tying knots between them as you go.
Our ball weighed approximately 30g when weighed in the stocking and resulted in a 9cm bauble.
Step 4Place the stocking piece with the wool ball into your washing machine and wash it on a warm, regular cycle, making sure to add your washing powder or liquid. Felting occurs through heat, soap and agitation, so with this method the washing machine will do all the work for you! When it is finished, you should notice fibres coming through the stocking piece as shown. This is an indication that the felting process has worked!
Step 5Remove the ball from the stocking piece. If your ball is out of shape, you can roll it between your hands to tray and get it more spherical while it’s still wet. Allow to dry completely.
Step 6Once your ball is dry, cut pieces of ribbon that are large enough to wrap around the ball and slightly overlap. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. We have used 2 x red and 2 x green pieces. Wrap each piece of ribbon around the ball as shown and use tacky glue to secure in place.
Step 7Create a hanger for the bauble using a length of ribbon and glue it in place at the top of your bauble. If possible, glue the ends under the ribbon that is already there for a stronger hold. Allow the glue to dry.
Step 8Use self-adhesive rhinestones to add a touch of sparkle!
Step 9Your Retro Wet Felted Christmas Bauble is now ready to hang!
