Ferris Wheel

Create your very own miniature carnival rides using materials from our STEAM Bumper Pack!

Everyone loves the Ferris Wheel and popsticks are the perfect material for making your very own small scale version. Test your construction skills and learn about force and motion as you build a Ferris Wheel that actually spins. Challenge your problem solving skills even further by working out how to make seats that also turn!

  • Step 1Take 3 of your regular popsticks and create a triangle. Secure using masking tape. You now have a triangle.
  • Step 2Using masking tape, attach 2 more sticks to the triangle to create a 2nd triangle.
  • Step 3Attach at the top point and bottom point then to each other and be sure to leave a gap at the centre of your wheel where the spokes meet.
  • Step 4You may need to trim the rounded end off the popstick to create this gap as shown in the image.
  • Step 5Continue to attach 2 sticks to the previous triangle, and see your hexagonal shape form. You now have a wheel. Make a second wheel in the same manner.
  • Step 6Use scissors to cut 3 of the giant popsticks in half - be sure to also cut off the rounded ends.
  • Step 7Use these pieces of giant popstick as cross bars between the 2 wheels. Space them evenly around your wheel and attach with masking tape.
  • Step 8To make the base of your ferris wheel, you will need to make sure the bottom base plate is wide enough that your wheel can fit easily within it, you should also ensure that your side panels are high enough to allow your wheel to spin freely.
  • Step 9Draw your measurements onto the construction foam and use a ruler and box knife to cut out the pieces. For our demonstration, our base plate is 120mmW x 170mmL and the side panels are 40mmW x 170mmL.
  • Step 10Attach each bracket base to each side panel and then each side panel, to the base plate using the masking tape. You now have a base.
  • Step 11Thread the wooden skewer through the centre holes of your wheel and then rest both ends of the skewer in the crook of the ‘X’ of the bracket bases.
  • Step 12Use the scissors to cut a popstick into 3 pieces and then use masking tape to attach 2 horizontal pieces to either end of a vertical piece, creating a handle.
  • Step 13Attach this to one end of the wooden skewer. You now have a handle to spin your ferris wheel! Paint your ferris wheel bright colours and watch the colours of the rainbow spin round and round!
