This Aboriginal Cultural Inclusivity Guide & Assessment Checklist has been designed for use by Early Learning Services. It is a self-guided tool designed to help create environments where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are not only respected but celebrated.
Additionally, this tool supports the embedding of Indigenous perspectives into everyday learning and practices, making these cultural elements an integral part of your service's educational foundation. Key topics covered include;
- Creating a Culturally Welcoming Environment
- Recognising and Honouring Indigenous Cultures
- Engaging with Community
- Cultural Competency and Training
- Curriculum and Programming Alignment with EYLF
- Environment and Resources
- Cultural Communication Practices
- Inclusive Policy Development
- Parental and Family Involvement
- Cultural Celebrations and Events
The guide provides clear guidance and practical suggestions for each focus area, which align directly with the corresponding sections of the quarterly checklist assessment. At the end of each checklist, an action plan is included. This is designed to be used as an ongoing process to strengthen cultural competency over time, rather than a one-off task completed once the checklist is finished. The action plan supports reflection, intentional planning, and continuous improvement, enabling services to document practice, identify next steps and demonstrate how Aboriginal cultures and perspectives are embedded across everyday practice in alignment with the EYLF and National Quality Standard.
