Step 1Use the template provided to cut out two leaf shapes from green felt. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 2Take one of the leaves and fold it in half (pointy end to pointy end). Use scissors to cut a 6.5cm line straight down the middle from the fold line as shown. When you unfold, there will be a slit in the middle of the leaf.
Step 3Use blanket stitches to sew around the edges of the slit that you cut in step 2. Adult supervision is recommended when using sewing needles. You can learn how to sew a blanket stitch here. On the other felt leaf, sketch out a message such as ‘Thanks for helping me grow’ using a HB pencil. Sew over your message using back stitches. You can learn how to sew a back stitch here.
Step 4Align the leaves together with the sewn message and slit each facing outwards. Once they are aligned, use a blanket stitch to sew all the way around the outside of the leaves so the 2 leaves are joined, creating a pocket.
Step 5Decorate the sunflower coaster pieces. We have used POSCA Markers but you can use your favourite craft materials. Stack the pieces of the coaster and use PVA glue to assemble. Allow to dry.
Step 6Place your finished coaster inside your leaf pocket. You should be able to see half of the coaster sticking out, as shown.
Step 7Your Sunflower Coaster is now ready to gift to someone special!
