Step 1Measure and draw a pencil line 3cm from the wider, open end of a cup. Carefully open a pair of scissors and push one blade into the cup anywhere along the line, so you can then insert the scissors and cut all the way around the line. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. You will now have two cup pieces as shown. Tidy up any rough edges if necessary.
Step 2Take the larger cup piece and cut a rounded section out of the front as shown, keeping the cut-out shape for Step 3. This will become the teeth.
Step 3Take the cut-out shape from Step 2 and position it so the curved section is facing down, then glue in place up under the cut-out in the cup as shown. Glue two wiggle eyes in place at the top of the cup and allow to dry.
Step 4Use coloured markers to draw features on your pirate. Add a nose, hair, beard, teeth, and a striped shirt. Nest the larger piece into the ring piece of the cup while doing this so the two sections and your drawings align together.
Step 5Use scissors to make two small cuts into the top of the large cup piece on either side of the pirate’s head. Decorate and cut out the pirate hat template provided. Slide it into the cuts you created to hold it in place on top of the pirate’s head.
Step 6Tape a straw to the inside back wall of the pirate’s head as shown.
Step 7Slide the straw through the other piece of cup. Holding the bottom edge of the smaller piece of cup in one hand and the bottom of the straw in the other, move the straw up and down to open and close the pirate’s mouth. Your Paper Cup Pirate Puppet is now ready to use!
