Step 1 Paint your 2 cardboard rolls with the black acrylic paint. Allow to dry.
Step 2 Cut 2 strips of black felt measuring approximately 2.5cm wide and approximately 15cm long. Use double sided tape to attach them to the end of each of the cardboard rolls.
Step 3 Assemble your binoculars by joining the cardboard rolls together using glue dots. Use a hole punch to create holes on either side of the binoculars at the top.
Step 4 Cut a piece of jute twine, thread the end through one of the punched holes and tie a knot. Thread the other end through the other hole and tie a knot making sure the loop you have now created is long enough to hang the binoculars around your neck.
Step 5 Use the A3 cover paper to create a basic wing shape. Look to ours for inspiration or come up with your own design. The size will vary depending on who they are being made for. You may need to join 2 pieces of A3 cover paper together to achieve this. Measure as you go to avoid wastage.
Step 6 Prepare your coloured “feathers” by first picking which coloured BRENEX squares you wish to use. Fold the squares in half diagonally and then in half diagonally again to create 4 small triangles. Unfold and cut along the lines to create triangles.
Step 7 Using glue start attaching the “feathers” to the wing shape starting along the bottom edge. Alternate and overlap your pieces. Start a second row of “feathers” above this first row, making sure they over lap. Continue to glue a row above that and so on until the complete wing is covered. Trim any overhanging pieces as needed and use sticky tape along the top row to give extra hold. Repeat this process to create a second wing.
Step 8 Use elastic to attach the wings to your arms. Cut 4 lengths of elastic - two big enough to create a loop that goes around the top of your arm near the shoulder and two big enough to create a loop that goes around your forearm. Once the pieces are cut, fold in half and tie a knot to create your loops.
Step 9 Use tape to secure the loops onto the back of the wings. You may need to position them over your back first to work out the best spot to put the loops.
