Research Dia De Los Muertos and Nicho Boxes to gain an understanding of the cultural significance of these rituals and practices.
Step 1Take one of the outer match box pieces – this will be the outer part of your Nicho. Use a pencil to sketch your design onto the centre, long rectangle and the two thin rectangles next to it. Make sure you include a window to cut out in your design. Once you are happy, carefully cut out the window section and keep the cut out piece to the side for later. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Decorate your design using markers.
Step 2Construct the internal tray piece of the match box and decorate the ends that will be seen along the top and bottom. Cover the inside of the box with glue then sprinkle with glitter. Carefully tip any excess glitter back into the tub to avoid wastage. Allow to dry.
Step 3Construct the decorated match box piece from Step 1 and allow to dry. The outside and inside pieces of your Nicho are now complete!
Step 4Take a small amount of white super light clay and create a skull shape. Use the cut out section you kept in Step 1 as a size guide so the skull will be the perfect size for your Nicho. Allow to dry.
Step 5Add detail to your skull using markers, then glue two small flower rhinestones as the eyes for a touch of sparkle! Allow to dry.
Step 6Glue the finished skull into the middle of the matchbox tray and slide into place. Allow to dry.
Step 7Your Skull Nicho Box is now ready to display! You can make as many as you would like and experiment with different designs and colour combinations.
