Step 1Begin by painting craters onto the inside of the construct a bauble using white paint and a triangular paintbrush. Study images of the moon and paint in the craters you observe. Paint both halves of the bauble then allow to dry.
Step 2Hold a jumbo paint brush upright and dip into some white paint. Dab a few times onto scrap paper so the brush isn’t fully loaded with paint and then start to dab onto the inside of the bauble. Use the dabbing motion to cover the inside of both bauble halves. Be sure to dab rather than use brush strokes as the dabs create a nice moon-like texture. Allow to dry.
Step 3Flip the bauble halves over and begin to add some crater details on the outside. By painting on the inside and outside we build up texture and layers that will add to the overall effect later. Be sure to paint both halves and then allow to dry.
Step 4Add a thin layer of tacky glue to the inside of the bauble.
Step 5Pull apart some cotton balls and stick a layer to the inside of the bauble. You will only need approximately 3 cottons balls for each half. The cotton balls will help to diffuse the light and create the soft, shadowy moon effect. Allow to dry.
Step 6While the cotton balls are drying, paint a paper cup black. Allow to dry and then use a similar dabbing technique with white paint as you did in step 2 to create a soft glow coming down from the bottom (closed end) of the cup. Allow to dry.
Step 7Use a sharp pencil to poke a hole in the bottom of the cup, making sure it’s in the centre. The cup is going to be a stand for the moon.
Step 8Take the LED Light String and place into one half of the bauble with the cork in the centre. Make sure there are some lights under the cork so there will be light shining from both sides. Turn the LED Light String on.
Step 9Close the bauble up with the light on the inside, aligning the plastic tabs. This is the moon!
Step 10Place the moon onto the upturned cup so the plastic tab of the moon goes through the hole in the cup.
Step 11Sit upright on a desk and then turn off the light to see the beautiful glow of your very own moon!
