Step 1On an A3 piece of cardboard, cut a square that is 27 x 27cm. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Use a ruler and a pencil to divide the square into 9 smaller squares. Each smaller square should be 9 x 9cm. Cut out the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 9th squares as shown in the image. Fold each square flap you just created inwards.
Step 2Create 3 more cardboard inserts similar to the pink cardboard in step 1. Cut out the blue cardboard so that it is 26.4 x 26.4cm and draw lines to divide into 9 squares. Cut out the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 9th squares. Cut out the purple cardboard so that it is 25.8 x 25.8cm and draw lines to divide into 9 squares. Cut out the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 9th squares. Cut out the yellow cardboard so that it is 24.6 x 24.6cm and draw lines to divide into 9 squares. Cut out the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 9th squares.
Step 3Cut a square of pink cardboard measuring 14 x 14cm. This will be used to create the lid of your box. Measure inwards 2cm from each edge and draw a line. Where the lines overlap, cut 1 edge of each side and fold inwards like shown in the image. Use glue dots to attach the cut edges to each side to create the lid.
Step 4Use patterned & coloured paper to decorate the inserts you created in steps 1 & 2.
Step 5Use glue dots to secure the inserts together. Insert the yellow into the purple, the purple into the blue and the blue into the pink.
Step 6To create a mini envelope to place inside your surprise gift box, cut out a square measuring 7 x 7cm from white copy paper. Fold 3 of the corners inwards toward the centre, making sure the bottom corner overlaps as shown. Glue the folded edge opposite the unfold page to the sides (as shown). Write a message for mum and place inside the envelope. Use a pretty rhinestone to seal your envelope.
Step 7Decorate the inside of each insert using photos, markers, stickers and anything else that will make mum smile.
Step 8Create a bow with ribbon & stick to the lid of the box. Fold your inserts inwards to create a box & place the lid on top so that it is closed. Your surprise gift box is ready to give to Mum on Mother’s Day!
