Step 1Remove the handles from your cotton bag. This can be done by unpicking the threads they are sewn on with or simply cut them off. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Keep the handles to the side for later use.
Step 2Fold the bag in half vertically, with the bag opening positioned at the top. With the folded edge on the left-hand side, rule a line in pencil from the top right corner to approximately 10cm down the folded edge. Use scissors to carefully cut down this line then open the bag up.
Step 3Wet the bag and squeeze out any excess water. Using gloves and a splash mat or tray to contain the mess, add blue tie dye paint to the wet bag. Scrunch and massage the paint into the fabric.
Step 4Once the bag is completely covered, pop it into a resealable bag and place in a fridge for at least 4 hours. Remove the bag from the fridge and take it out of the resealable bag. Allow the cotton bag to air dry completely before washing out any excess dye in cold water. Allow the bag to air dry completely once again then heat set your dyed bag using an iron. Adult supervision is recommended when using an iron.
Step 5Use the templates provided to cut out four teeth from white felt, four gums from red felt and one fin from blue felt. Use tacky glue to stick the teeth onto the gums as shown. Allow to dry.
Step 6Place the teeth and gums in position inside the bag and trim any overlapping pieces if necessary. Add tacky glue to the inside rim of the bag on one side and stick two of the teeth/gum sets in place as shown. Make sure the red felt is on the inside of the bag. Flip the bag over so you can see the outside of the bag and add tacky glue where the bag edge meets the teeth. Spread out using a glue brush and allow to dry. Repeat on the opposite side of the bag to complete the shark’s mouth.
Step 7Use a needle and 1m of embroidery thread to sew the fin onto the edge of bag at the base as shown. Click here to learn how to sew a back stitch. Tie a knot and cut away any excess thread.
Step 8Complete your shark design by adding an eye with a permanent marker.
Step 9Finish the bag by adding the handles. Take the two handles and align the ends. Open the bag at the top corner and squeeze some tacky glue on each side as shown. Push the ends of the handles inside then pinch the corner shut. Repeat on the opposite side. You may wish to use clips to keep the handles squeezed tightly inside while they dry. Allow to dry completely before removing the clips.
Step 10Your Shark Beach Bag is now ready to use. Fill your bag with everything you need for a great day at the beach!
